Adapted by Simon Law

Duologue
Characters: Yertle and Mack
YERTLE is sat on a huge rock, MACK is sat beneath the rock on pond floor in the mud
Gertrude McFuzz: GERTRUDE: Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, just look at my tail, I only have one pathetic feather, not like Lolla Lee Lou, who has many, she’s so much prettier than I am with her beautiful fanned tail. I’ll go and see my uncle, Doctor Drake, he’s sure to know how to help me! (She strides off to see DOCTOR DRAKE who is sitting in his pond) DOCTOR DRAKE: Hallo my dear, how are this this fine morning, are you coming swimming, the water’s lovely and fresh?
Yertle the Turtle: YERTLE: Mack, Mack! Who do you think I am sitting here on the ‘Great Rock’? MACK: You’re Yertle, why are you asking? YERTLE: Not just Yertle, I am Yertle the ‘King’ of this pond, and you are merely a muddy Turtle below me! MACK: Yes, of course Yertle, but I am strong and bigger than you, how can you be King, why not me?YERTLE: I will tell you my little, mottled friend! Because I am wise and adventurous, and though you may be bigger and stronger than me, I can be King because, no-one else has thought of it, except for me.
