Miss Pembleton is running an Inter-School Mathematics competition and is recruiting team leader for the schools’ team. Kelly and Lottie are competing for the position, Kelly is brilliant at Maths but unfortunately Lottie isn’t! But Lottie is brilliant at spelling! They are both best friends, but compete ferociously over everything. The scene is set in a classroom at lunchtime.

Characters: Miss Pembleton – the teacher, Kelly and Lottie both agd 10.

Miss Pembleton:        Well, I thought they were quite difficult actually! Try this one.  144 divided by 12?

Lottie:                              (Immediately) 14 .. that’s so easy Miss!! Huh!!

Miss Pembleton:         Kelly?

Kelly:                                It’s 12 Miss. The square-root of 144 is 12, so 12 12’s are 144.

Miss Pembleton:         Yes, that’s correct Kelly, well done!

Lottie:                              (Whispers) Smarty pants!!

Miss Pembleton:         Well it seems we have our team leader. Well done Kelly!!

Lottie:                              How do you know all this stuff??

Kelly:                               I’m just a genius! (Spells out) G E N I O U S!
