Whoville Town Square, a few days before Christmas. The Whoville Town Square is decorated with colourful lights and ornaments. The Whos are busy preparing for Christmas.
CINDY LOU WHO:
(Excitedly) Christmas is just around the corner, and I can't wait for all the fun!
MAYOR AUGUSTUS:
(In a cheerful tone) Indeed, Cindy Lou! This year's celebration will be the best one yet!
MARTHA MAY WHOVIER:
(Hanging ornaments) And I've got a surprise decoration that'll make everyone's hearts grow three sizes!
MAYOR AUGUSTUS:
Oh, really Martha May, and how do you expect to do that, may I ask?
MARTHA MAY WHOVIER:
Just you wait and see, it wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you!
CINDY LOU WHO:
Oh, I love surprises so much, can you really make our hearts grow three sizes Martha May?
MARTHA MAY WHOVIER:
(Whispering) Stay close to me, and you’ll be the first one to see. (The Grinch enters sneakily, wearing a Santa disguise and carrying a sack.)
THE GRINCH:
(Whispering) Those Whos won't know what hit them! (Cindy Lou Who notices the Grinch.)
CINDY LOU WHO:
(Startled) Wait a minute! Who's that?
MAYOR AUGUSTUS:
(Squinting) Looks like Santa Claus to me!
MARTHA MAY WHOVIER:
(Doubtful) That Santa looks a bit... green to me. (The Grinch approaches a Christmas tree, about to steal decorations.)
CINDY LOU WHO:
(Concerned) Just a minute, I need to check on this Santa! He certainly looks very strange to me too! (Cindy Lou Who approaches the Grinch.)
(Curious) Santa, is that you?
(Curious) Santa, is that you?
THE GRINCH:
(Nervous) Ho, ho, ho! Why, of course, it's me! Look at my lovely red outfit, and Santa Hat! (Pretending to put presents under the tree, but really loading them into his sack) And look (putting one present back) I’m giving you all presents!!
CINDY LOU WHO:
(Doubtful) Hmmm! You don't sound like Santa, and you're very green!
THE GRINCH:
(Humbly) Green, me? …. Why you’re mistaken, I am Santa, I’ve just been a bit poorly of late, and eaten too many green berries, that’s why I look a bit …. off colour! (Martha May Whovier rushes over, recognizing the Grinch.)
MARTHA MAY WHOVIER:
(Shouting) It's the Grinch! Stop him!
THE GRINCH:
These Whovillites can be such a pain! Arg! (The Grinch starts to run off with a sack of presents from under the tree.)
MAYOR AUGUSTUS:
(Panicking) Sound the alarm! Catch him .. he’s stolen all our presents, and decorations!! Catch him before he gets away and ruins our Christmas again. Chaos ensues as the Whos chase the Grinch around the Town Square.
CINDY LOU WHO:
(Determined) We can't let him steal our Christmas! (The Grinch is cornered.)
THE GRINCH:
(Apologetic) Okay, okay, I give up! Here are all your presents and decorations, I’m sorry.
CINDY LOU WHO:
(Kindly) What made you want to steal Christmas, Mr. Grinch?
THE GRINCH:
(Reflective) I thought it was all about presents and decorations, and I never had any. No-one ever got me a present before, no-one likes me enough. But now I see from you Whovilles, that it's about being together with loved ones.
MARTHA MAY WHOVIER:
(Sympathetic) If you like …. You can join our Christmas, Mr. Grinch.
MAYOR AUGUSTUS:
(Forgiving) Everyone deserves a chance to change … a second chance.
Well, Mr Grinch, it seems as if you have some friends after all, maybe you will get a present this Christmas, if you promise to change? Will you do that?

THE GRINCH:
Oh, I’m so glad to have new friends, but I don’t deserve any presents, I’m too mean and horrid!
MARTHA MAY WHOVIER:
I think you’re just sad, and friends make you happy.
CINDY LOU WHO:
.. and I will be your friend, how about you Marth May?
MARTHA MAY WHOVIER:
..and me too (hugs the Grinch) Mayor Augustus.. ?
MAYOR AUGUSTUS:
Hmmmm. (Long pause, while he considers) .. Well ok then, Mr Grinch I hereby invite you to join our Christmas celebrations! MARTHA & CINDY: Hooray!!
THE GRINCH:
Now I know I have some friends, I’m so happy, thank you (they all hug). (The Grinch helps the Whos prepare for Christmas.)
(Grateful) I promise, I'll make this the best Whoville Christmas ever! (Christmas Eve in Whoville. The Grinch, dressed in Santa attire, distributes presents to the Whos.)

MARTHA MAY WHOVIER:

THE GRINCH:
.. and the best Christmas of all time!
MAYOR AUGUSTUS/NARRATOR:
(To audience) And so, in the heart of Whoville, the Grinch found the true meaning of Christmas and shared the joy with everyone.
