The Ugly Duckling

In a lively farm setting, the Ugly Duckling struggles to find acceptance among his peers. As he discovers his true identity, he learns that beauty comes from within.
Ensemble
Characters: MOTHER DUCK, UGLY DUCKLING, YELLOW DUCKLINGS, COW, SHEEP, HORSE, GOAT, FARM ANIMALS
(A farm setting with a pond is established as the characters interact.)
UGLY DUCKLING:
(Cracking out from an egg - other eggs - YELLOW DUCKLINGS can be cracking out if more parts are needed) Cheep! Cheep! Hello are you my mummy?
MOTHER DUCK:
(Peers down at UGLY DUCKLING) Hello, what a funny little thing you are. You are grey and have black feet, you do not look like a duckling to me.
YELLOW DUCKLINGS:
Cheep cheep! (optional: altogether) You do not look like a fluffy little duckling like us
MOTHER DUCK:
Come on my little ducklings, follow me, we are going to the farm and over to the pond. Don’t get lost! (MOTHER DUCK walks around with YELLOW DUCKLINGS following, with UGLY DUCKLING at the back)
UGLY DUCKLING:
Oooh I can hardly keep up, not so fast! Wait for me! Why are they all staring at me?
COW:
What a strange little thing that is!
SHEEP:
What a strange little thing that is
HORSE:
What a strange little thing that is
GOAT:
What a strange little thing that is
YELLOW DUCKLINGS:
(All point and stare too) Yes he is a strange little Thing!
MOTHER DUCK:
Stop staring everyone. Here we are now at the pond, time to have your first swim, come along, get in carefully and follow me! (MOTHER DUCK leads YELLOW DUCKLINGS swimming around, one little yellow duck stays behind)
YELLOW DUCKLING:
(Looking at UGLY DUCKLING) You can’t swim in here, you are not one of us! Go away!
UGLY DUCKLING:
(Looking very forlorn and sad) I will swim on my own then, I wonder why they don’t like me. Brrrrr! The water is so cold! I wish I could fly up in the sky like those fine swans (pointing up in sky and shivering with cold) I will just keep swimming! This is so tiring, I think I will take a little sleep in the reeds
(Waking up slowly) Gosh I have slept for a long time! I must have a little wash. (Splashes face with water then looks down into the water and sees his reflection, he gasps, surprised and then smiles) Oh look at me, I can’t believe it, I’m not brown, I am beautiful, I am a fine white swan, I am so happy and I can fly!
YELLOW DUCKLINGS:
(Swimming forward) Hello fine swan, you really are very beautiful, would you like to come and swim with us?
UGLY DUCKLING:
Oooooooh! Yes please, yes please! (MOTHER DUCK swims forward looking in amazement)
MOTHER DUCK:
Come on my little darling ducklings and you beautiful fine swan too follow me! Come along.
FARM ANIMALS:
(All run forward and surround MOTHER DUCK, YELLOW DUCKLINGS and UGLY DUCKLING making lots of happy noises)
