Characters: MISS HONEY, MATILDA
(MATILDA is with MISS HONEY in the classroom. A glass of water has tipped over, over Miss Trunchbull. MISS HONEY and MATILDA are cleaning up the water. In this scene MATILDA admits to making a glass of water tip over with her eyes.)
MATILDA:
Miss Honey ...
MISS HONEY:
Yes. Matilda?
MATILDA:
I did it.
MISS HONEY:
Did what?
MATILDA:
I made the glass tip over.
MISS HONEY:
Don't let her make you feel bad. It was an accident.
MATILDA:
I did it with my eyes. Watch.
MISS HONEY:
It's wonderful you feel so powerful. Many people don't.
MATILDA:
(Staring at the glass of water on the table where they have been putting the spilt water) Come on. Tip over. Tip over.
MISS HONEY:
It's all right, Matilda.
MATILDA:
I really did do it, Miss Honey ...
MISS HONEY:
Sometimes you can do things. But when you want to show someone, then you can't. Or maybe something is broken...
MATILDA:
This isn't like that. I don't know. Maybe I made myself tired.
MISS HONEY:
Would you like to go to my house?
MATILDA:
I'd like that very much.
MISS HONEY:
Good. (They start walking to MISS HONEY’s COTTAGE close by the school)
MATILDA:
I just stare very hard and I can feel the strongness. I feel I can move almost anything. You do believe me. Don't you?
MISS HONEY:
You should believe in it. Believe it with all your heart. That's where Miss Trunchbull lives. (They reach Miss Truncbull’s house)
MATILDA:
Why is there a swing?
MISS HONEY:
A girl used to live in that house. Her life was good and happy. When she was two, her mother died. Her father was a doctor. He needed someone to look after things. He asked the mother's stepsister to live with them. But the girl's aunt was mean and treated her badly.
MATILDA:
Trunchbull? (They carry on walking)
MISS HONEY:
Yes. Then the girl's father died.
MATILDA:
How did her father die?
MISS HONEY:
The police said he killed himself.
MATILDA:
Why would he do that?
MISS HONEY:
No one knows. The end is happier. She found a small cottage. She rented it for $50 a month and planted hundreds of wild flowers. And she moved out of the house.
MATILDA:
Good for her.
MISS HONEY:
Do you know why I told you this?
MATILDA:
No. (They reach MISS HONEY’s cottage)
MISS HONEY:
Your family doesn't appreciate you. One day, things will be different. Should we have tea and cookies?
MATILDA:
Yes, please. (MISS HONEY places a cake on the table, it has a picture of a cottage on it) It's the cottage from your story.
MISS HONEY:
Yes.
MATILDA:
The young woman is you! Then ..... No!
MISS HONEY:
Yes. Aunt Trunchbull. When I left Aunt Trunchbull's home. I left all my treasures behind.
MATILDA:
Treasures?
MISS HONEY:
Photos of my mother and father. And a beautiful doll my mother gave me. Lissy Doll, I called her. (Pouring the tea) Milk?
MATILDA:
Yes, please. Why don't you run away?
MISS HONEY:
I've thought about it, but I can't abandon my children. Without teaching I'd have nothing.
MATILDA:
You're very brave.
MISS HONEY:
Not as brave as you.
MATILDA:
I thought adults weren't afraid.
MISS HONEY:
All adults get scared, just like children.
MATILDA:
I wonder what Miss Trunchbull is afraid of. There she is!
