Characters: ANN, DANA, HOLLY
(DANA is sitting in a diner waiting to see her friends. She’s had a haircut and isn’t really sure if she or they will like it.)
ANN:
Dana, what did you do to your hair?
DANA:
It looks terrible, doesn’t it?
ANN:
It’s short
DANA:
I thought if I cut it it’d make me look more ... you know, more mature. You hate it don’t you?
ANN:
No, it’s just .... I’m not used to it! I mean, since first grade your hair has been to your waist. Now it’s ... it’s short!
DANA:
Oh, I wish I hadn’t cut it
ANN:
It’ll grow back
DANA:
From here to my waist? That will take years! Oh I hate it I just hate it
ANN:
I think it’s cute
DANA:
You’re lying. Please don’t lie to me
ANN:
OK
DANA:
So you hate it don’t you
ANN:
Hate is an awfully strong word, I’d say ... I’d say ...
DANA:
Say it! just say it!
ANN:
It’s different
DANA:
Bad different, or good different?
ANN:
Neither. Just different
HOLLY:
(Enters) Dana, you cut your hair! Oh, my gosh! Why did you cut it? It was so long and pretty! I would’ve done anything to have your hair! You cut it? You really cut it?
ANN:
And doesn’t it make her look more mature? (elbows HOLLY)
HOLLY:
Not really. But, I do think it makes her look more ... more ... what’s the word?
DANA:
More what? Say it! Just say it!
ANN:
Sophisticated!
HOLLY:
No, that’s not it
ANN:
Elegant!
HOLLY:
No, not that
ANN:
Glamorous!
HOLLY:
No
ANN:
Stylish!
HOLLY:
No
DANA:
Then what?
HOLLY:
Plain
DANA:
Plain?
ANN:
Holly!
HOLLY:
Well, I’m being honest you want me to be honest, don’t you? Before, Dana always got lots of attention because her hair was long. I mean, how many people have long hair nowadays? Not too many. And now she just looks like everyone else. Plain.
DANA:
I hate it! I just hate it!
HOLLY:
It’ll grow back.
DANA:
Maybe I should get a wig!
HOLLY:
Too bad you can’t get all your hair back and glue it on
DANA:
I wish I could!
HOLLY:
Oh well. We live, we learn.
ANN:
Well, I’m starting to like it more and more. And yes, I do think you look more mature. Who wants to look like a little girl with long hair?
HOLLY:
I’d take long hair. I’m just not patient enough to let it grow out. It always gets to a certain point, and then I’m running off to the salon for a new style
ANN:
And now Dana has a great new style! It was time. Time to grow up and cut the little girl hair off
DANA:
You really think so Ann?
ANN:
Absolutely! And I really like your cut. I wouldn’t mind getting one just like it. Of course it probably wouldn’t look as good on me
HOLLY:
Anything would look better on you than those stupid ponytails you always wear. Talk about needing a new style
ANN:
Well look who’s talking! You with the split ends!
HOLLY:
I don’t have split ends!
ANN:
Well, maybe you should look a little closer! And Dana, your hair looks so healthy now. It’s not weighed down, but bouncy and shiny!
DANA:
You really like it!
ANN:
I’m liking it more and more every minute!
DANA:
Really?
ANN:
Really.
HOLLY:
Can I disagree?
ANN:
Holly, why don’t you take your negativity and split ends somewhere else?
HOLLY:
Fine! (HOLLY exits)
ANN:
She is the most negative person I’ve ever met! I think she’s jealous!
DANA:
Jealous? Of me?
ANN:
Of course! Look how stylish you are now! She’s the one who’s plain! But you … wow! you’re radiant!
DANA:
Really?
ANN:
Really!??
DANA:
Oh you hate it don’t you!? I hate it too!! (DANA runs off crying hysterically)
ANN:
(To herself) At least it’ll grow back.
