DOROTHY: Auntie Em! Auntie Em! Oh dear Toto - the cyclone is coming closer. What shall we do? We haven't time to get down to the storm shelter. Ouch! That hurt! ... I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more. We must be over the rainbow.
Monologue
Characters: DOROTHY
DOROTHY and her little dog Toto live on a farm in Kansas with her Auntie Em and Uncle Henry. The nasty Miss Gulch, who dislikes Toto, is her worst enemy. One day, a terrible cyclone strikes, whirling the house, Dorothy and Toto away to the Land of Oz.
DOROTHY:
Auntie Em! Auntie Em! Oh dear Toto - the cyclone is coming closer. What shall we do? We haven't time to get down to the storm shelter. Ouch! That hurt!
(Debris begins to fly around her) There goes the window! There's swirling dust everywhere! The house is spinning up through dust. Look Toto! Watch out! We're not on the ground any more, Toto! There's the chicken coop! And an old lady sitting in a rocking chair. Knitting! She's flying through the sky! And look - there's a cow! A cow - just floating past! And a rowing boat.
(DOROTHY tries to stand up - away from the bed- but ducks to avoid a floating tree) Whoops! That was a tree! And it nearly hit me! We must be up inside the cyclone. (She sits on the edge of the bed, watching the world pass by her)
There's Miss Gulch, Toto - on her bicycle. Quick Toto - hide! She mustn't see you! She hasn't forgiven you for chasing her nasty old cat! I hate her! Oh Toto - look - the bicycle - it's changed into a broomstick! And her clothes - she's wearing a flying robe - and a pointed hat!
(DOROTHY lies face down on the bed, covering her eyes) Has she gone Toto? I'm scared. Everything is spinning round us. (Screaming) Round... and round... the house is turning - spinning - twirling - the cyclone is whirling! Louder... and louder... Help! We're coming down! We're falling through the air. We're going to crash.
(They land with a thud. DOROTHY waits a moment. She lets go of Toto, climbs off the bed... and walks forward, looking around her) Toto... I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more. We must be over the rainbow.
