Duologue
Characters: HARE, TORTOISE
The HARE and the TORTOISE are in the wood.
HARE:
Just look at your funny little fat legs Tortoise. They are so short and stubbly, you can hardly move, how do you ever get anywhere?
TORTOISE:
I’m just fine, leave me alone, I tread carefully and go my own pace and I always get to where I want to.
HARE:
Well why don’t we have a race to see who can get to the finishing line first. (Calling into the woods) Mr Fox, Mr Fox, will you choose the course and the finishing line please?
TORTOISE:
Ok, I am not at all worried, I would enjoy racing you. Let’s stand on the starting line and Mr Fox can start us off! (HARE and TORTOISE stand side by side, TORTOISE is laid back and HARE is raring to go)
HARE:
Ok! Wait for Mr Fox (Big Pause) We’re off, (he runs) where are you Tortoise, where are you, you’ll never keep up! Byeeeeeeee! (HARE disappears)
TORTOISE:
Oh gosh look at him steaming ahead, silly show off, what a lovely peaceful walk, I will just take my time. (HARE walks around very, very slowly)
HARE:
(Running in out of breath) I knew it, I knew it, Tortoise is nowhere in sight, he will never make it, this is the easiest race I will ever win. Gosh I am out of breath I think I will just take a rest on this grassy mound. (Hare curls up at the side and slowly falls asleep. Tortoise continues to walk and passes by Hare who is fast asleep)
TORTOISE:
Oh dear look at Hare he has worn himself out, he is always in a rush! This is such a lovely walk. Well I never, there’s the finishing line already. Hi Mr Fox, I made it, I made it, I’ve won a race, gosh! (HARE comes running in)
HARE:
Here I come, I’ve made it, I’ve won! (Hare looks around to Mr Fox and TORTOISE and is astonished) I can’t believe it, you’re here, you beat me, how on earth did you do it Tortoise? (TORTOISE shrugs - Pause. HARE and TORTOISE move to the front arms around each other.)
BOTH:
(Say moral together) And the moral of this tale is: You can be more successful by doing things slowly and steadily, than by acting quickly and carelessly.
