Characters: PEDERHANS

There was once an Emperor who spent much money on clothes. One day, two brothers, HANS and PEDER, decided to trick him. They pretended to be weavers whose magnificent cloth could only be seen by those who were worthy of the offices they held. To everyone else, the clothes were invisible. The Emperor thought that if he employed the men to weave for him, he would be able to discover the true quality of his employees. He paid the men in advance – and for a long time, they pretended to weave on empty looms. The Emperor kept sending his most trusted officials, to see how the weavers were progressing. They all lied to him because they didn’t want him to think that they were not fit to be employed.

The Witches:

Duologue Characters: BOY & BRUNO

Bruno and his Grandmother are staying at the Hotel Magnificent in Bournemouth where the Witches of England are holding their Annual Meeting presided over by the Grand High Witch of all the World. She has a plan to get rid of all the children of England by injecting sweets with a magic potion that will turn them into mice. Mouse traps will then be used to kill the mice. Boy and the rather greedy BRUNO Jenkins have been used by the Grand High Witch to demonstrate the effectiveness of the formula. As the lights come up on a wall in the ballroom, Boy scampers in and sniffs around.

PEDER: Well Hans, we’ve made so much gold. What shall we do next?

HANS: We’ve stayed here too long already.

PEDER: How much longer do you think we can actually get away with it? (Laughs) I must say, it was a stroke of genius! My idea, of course.

HANS: Your idea! It was mine!

PEDER: Mine, brother! I’m the oldest –

HANS: But I’m the genius!

The Witches

BOY: (Calling) Bruno! Bruno Jenkins! (No reply. Boy frisks around happily. To the audience) I should be sad. I should feel desperate. I mean, I’ve never dreamed of being a mouse, like I’ve dreamed of being, say, a film star. But now that I am one, I’m beginning to see the advantages. I know mice sometimes get poisoned or caught in traps but boys sometimes get killed too – run over or get some awful illness. Boys have to go to school. Mice don’t. Mice don’t have to pass exams. When mice grow up they don’t have to go out to work. Mm. It’s no bad thing to be a mouse. I’m as free as William and Mary. Hope they’re all right. (Bruno, dressed as a mouse, enters eating a chunk of bread)

BOY: Hello, Bruno. (Bruno nods) What have you found?

BRUNO: An ancient fish paste sandwich. Pretty good. Bit pongy.
